Trust donates health care books to ministry

The Nation, 25th March 2008

By Montfort Misunje

The Ministry of Health last Thursday received 713 health care handbooks entitled Pamene Palibe Dokotala that will help in primary health care.

Umoyo Trust, a local non-governmental organization based in Blantyre, made the donation at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.

The handbooks will be distributed for use by health surveillance assistants in Balaka and Phalombe districts.

Speaking when he made the donation, Umoyo Trust Chairperson James Manda said the book will be used as reference material, guiding diagnosis, prescription, medication and treatment of various ailments.

‘’ The book can be used in homes in both rural and urban, schools and colleges, orphanages and other public institutions’’ he said.

Minister of Health Khumbo Kachali thanked Umoyo Trust for donating the books and GTZ for funding the publication.

‘’ Now health workers in the rural areas will be able to assist in areas where they were not able to do so before.’’ Said Kachali, adding: ‘’ they will now be able to prevent illness, treat common disease with simple and readily available medicine and know when urgent referral to hospital is necessary.’’

Where there is no Doctor was written by David Werner in collaboration with Carol Thuman, Jane Maxwell and Andrew Pearson and was published in1979. It has been translated into 70 languages worldwide.

Pamene Palibe Dokotala is a Chichewa translation of the book. It was translated by the University of Malawi Language lecturers at Chancellor College and published by Umoyo Trust.
