Umoyo Trust is a non-profit publisher of Hesperian books for community-based health care in Chichewa, the local language of Malawi.

Our translated, simply written and heavily illustrated Hesperian books were developed collaboratively with health workers and community members from around the world and then adapted by the linguistic and medical experts in Malawi.  Our first published book, Pamene Palibe Dokotala, the Chichewa translation of the Hesperian world-acclaimed Where There is No Doctor, has become one of the most popular health care books used by health workers, midwifes and community members in various districts of Malawi. At some places our book is the only resource of community-friendly health information.

Umoyo Trust is since its humble beginnings driven by the vision of every household to have an access to primary-health care and self-help information in absence of medical personnel. In the country where the doctor-patient ratio is 64,000 to one and where the mortality rate is one of the highest in the world, we believe that the presence of community-friendly resource of health information is an invaluable tool to improve the heath situation of people living in Malawi. Indeed, where a nearest clinic might be hours afar, such first aid or preventive information can be life saving!

Umoyo Trust books teach:

  • How to prevent, diagnose and treat common diseases by accessible means
  • When to seek a medical help
  • Maternal and child health care, including family planning
  • HIV/AIDS prevention and how to stay healthy when HIV positive
  • Safe water and sanitation
  • Community response in action in dealing with common health issues
  • What to eat to stay healthy
  • First aid
  • Appropriate use of traditional and medical drugs

Umoyo Trust books are sold for not-for profit; the revenues from the sales support the sustainability of Umoyo Trust as well as production costs of new publications and prints.
